Nikoletta Theodoropoulou, born in 1979, is a multidisciplinary artist based in Athens. Her artistic practice encompasses drawing, painting, collage, paper stitching, and printing. She employs various mediums, including charcoal drawings on paper, acrylic and oil painting on canvas, monoprinting and embroidery on paper. Nikoletta is evolving her visual language, which depicts figures or organic forms against a grid, interwoven with geometrically composed chromatic gradations, which she named “glissanti”.
Nikoletta’s work explores the connotations evoked by the visual interaction between symbolic figures and color. Her art is characterized by a thoughtful interplay of form and hue, aiming to engage viewers in a dialogue with the artwork. The “Tangible Abstract” series from 2021 marked a significant evolution in her style, blending abstraction with figurative forms. In her “Red Stitches” series from 2023, she further experimented by tearing apart her still-life charcoal drawings—produced from direct observation—and stitching them back together with red thread to comment on collective trauma and social issues affecting the Greek community, merging aesthetic exploration with social critique.
Nikoletta has showcased her work in group exhibitions, including the European Center – Contemporary Space in Athens, the Candid Arts Trust in London, and Cheapart in Athens. She has also participated in the OpenUp Creative Europe Programme at the UTH Department of Architecture in Volos, Greece. In September 2023, she orchestrated and curated a solo exhibition at Hamak restaurant in Achillio seaside village near Volos, Greece, showcasing her “Red Stitches” series of drawings. Throughout the exhibition’s duration, severe weather conditions led to substantial nearby infrastructure damage and fatalities, imbuing the exhibition with an unexpectedly timely and painful relevance.
